Coffee Talk: Thinking Differently About Cataloging: Visualizing Your Ideas

Cataloging and metadata, just like any other area of librarianship, can be creative. Join Ann Kardos and Thea Atwood as they introduce thinking creatively to process thoughts and ideas through art making. Please bring paper and something to draw with (crayons, gel pens, markers, whatever you like!). This interactive workshop will focus on getting everyone drawing and sharing their ideas.

Ann Kardos, Metadata Librarian at University of Massachusetts Amherst, has a bachelor's degree in television and film, and she worked for several documentary filmmakers before she became a librarian. She is also a trained chef. She has taken classes in photography, oil painting and multiple needle arts. Her embroidery art has been shown in museums and galleries in Pennsylvania, Maine and Massachusetts. Her research interests include librarianship as a creative pursuit and using art as a tool for innovation, communication and expression.

Thea Atwood, Public and Environmental Health Sciences Librarian at Indiana University Bloomington, is a long-time art dabbler and bullet journaler. She has presented on her process at IU Bloomington and the Five Colleges, and is an advocate for incorporating regular reflective practices as a way to check in, track progress and mitigate overwhelm. Her current research interests include creative reflective work through regular practice and developing learner-centered guidance for systematic reviews.
