Dear OLAC Members, It is a pleasure to write this first column as the incoming President of OLAC. It is an awesome responsibility and I thank you for the opportunity. I would like to thank all the outgoing members of the OLAC Executive Board, especially Bobby Bothmann, last year’s President, for his motivating leadership, his laid-back manner and never-ending patience along with his unfailing good humor. They were much appreciated by all of us who had the chance to work with him. In addition, I would like to thank Amy K. Weiss for her contribution as Editor-In-Chief of the OLAC Newsletter. It is a difficult and time-consuming job. And finally, my thanks to Kate James for her work as our Treasurer. Next up for Kate is taking over as the OLAC Newsletter Editor as of the March 2010 issue. My congratulations go to Paige Andrew, currently the OLAC Secretary, who received the Nancy B. Olson award. Your commitment to helping new librarians is a project dear to my heart and I loved your acceptance speech. I would like to congratulate Kevin Furniss and Morag Boyd who received the OLAC Research Grant. Look for the announcement to see the details of their project. Look for details on conference programs and for the great work of CAPC in this and the next issue of the newsletter. CAPC had a number of proposals approved that will affect our work. You should also begin to see announcements on the 2010 conference in Macon, Georgia as well as calls for session ideas and speakers. Please consider becoming involved in the program sessions. I look forward to meeting a number of you there. And finally, feel free to contact me at ploghry@nd.edu with any questions, concerns or suggestions you may have about OLAC.
This is the second-to-the last OLAC Newsletter in print format. As is typical after an OLAC meeting cycle, we have an embarrassment of riches for you this quarter. A couple of reports will appear in the December Newsletter just to balance things out a bit. In a way, it is too bad to be losing the print. I have a collection of Newsletters going back many years on a shelf in my office and I do shuffle through them from time to time. However, I find if I’m really looking for what Jay had to say about a specific cataloging issue, I’m much more likely to go to the Website and reference the online version. An online version will also give us a chance to add graphics and will alleviate the problems associated with a long issue, namely high printing and postage costs. So, one more time, enjoy the beige journal! The end is near…
